History of Avalon Gardens
The Avalon Gardens were built in 1941. They cost about $638,000 to construct. At first, these homes were made for families of soldiers during World War II.
In 1947, the homes became open to families with lower incomes. Many people wanted to live there, so there was a long waiting list. By the 1950s, most residents were low-income families, not military families.
By the late 1970s, the buildings started to get old and needed repairs. The area also faced challenges with safety. In the early 1990s, the community worked to improve safety and living conditions.
In 1996, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles spent $1.7 million to make the area safer. They added a decorative fence and a tall wall around the complex. After these changes, Avalon Gardens became a gated community. This means it has controlled entrances to help keep residents safe.
