Aveline Fitz Peter, Countess of Essex facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Aveline de Clare, Countess of Essex was an important English noblewoman who lived from about 1178 to 1225.

She was the daughter of Roger de Clare, 2nd Earl of Hertford, and his wife, Matilda de St. Hilaire. Aveline married twice in her lifetime. Her first husband, William de Munchensy, passed away in 1204. She married again by May 29, 1205, to Geoffrey fitz Peter, Earl of Essex. He was her second husband. Aveline became a widow for the second time on October 14, 1213.

King John gave her step-brother, William, Earl of Arundel, the right to decide who Aveline would marry next. This happened on May 7, 1204. He also became the guardian of her children from her first marriage. After her second marriage, Aveline paid the King for the right to look after a young man named John de Wahulle and manage his lands.

After her second husband died, Countess Aveline gave gifts to Holy Trinity, London. She did this to honor Geoffrey fitz Peter, as part of his body was buried there. Aveline herself was buried in Shouldham Priory. This priory was a religious house founded by Geoffrey fitz Peter in 1198. She was laid to rest next to the rest of her husband's body.
