Where Was This Ghost Town?
The old town site of Avery is in eastern Crawford County, Missouri. It sits above a place called Avery Hollow. You can find it about two miles west of Onondaga Cave State Park. A road called Missouri Route MM runs right next to where the town used to be. The Avery cemetery, where people from the town were buried, is located between Route MM and Avery Hollow.
How Did Avery Get Its Name?
A post office opened in Avery in 1853. It helped people send and receive mail. This post office stayed open until 1865. The town probably got its name from Avery Valley. This valley was named after a local family who lived there.
