History of Bellanca Aircraft
Giuseppe Mario Bellanca was a very important airplane designer. He even built Italy's first aircraft! In 1911, he moved to the United States. Here, he started designing planes for different companies. These included the Maryland Pressed Steel Company and Wright Aeronautical Corporation.
Founding the Company
Bellanca decided to start his own company in 1927. He called it Bellanca Aircraft Corporation of America. It first opened in Richmond Hill, New York. Then, in 1928, it moved to New Castle (Wilmington), Delaware.
Famous for Efficiency
During the 1920s and 1930s, Bellanca's airplanes became very famous. They were known for being super efficient and cheap to fly. Many of them set world records for how long they could stay in the air and how far they could fly.
For example, Charles Lindbergh wanted a Bellanca WB-2 for his famous flight from New York to Paris. However, the company wanted to choose the pilot and crew. This made Lindbergh decide to use a plane from Ryan Aeronautical Company instead.
Changes in Ownership
Giuseppe Bellanca was the president and chairman of the company from its start in 1927. He stayed in charge until 1954. That year, he sold the company to L. Albert and Sons. After that, the Bellanca airplane designs were made by a series of different companies. These companies kept making the original Bellanca aircraft models.
