Ayşe Şahin facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ayşe Arzu Şahin is a talented mathematician from Turkey and America. She studies something called dynamical systems. This is a cool area of math that looks at how things change over time. Since June 2020, she has been the Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics at Wright State University. A "dean" is like a principal for a big part of a university. She has also helped write two important math textbooks.

Ayşe Arzu Şahin's Journey in Math

Early Education

Ayşe Arzu Şahin finished her first college degree at Mount Holyoke College in 1988. She then went on to earn her Ph.D. in 1994. She got this advanced degree from the University of Maryland, College Park. Her special project for her Ph.D. was about "Tiling Representations of \mathbb{R}^2 Actions". This sounds complicated, but it's a deep dive into how patterns can fill a space. Her professor, Daniel Rudolph, guided her research.

Teaching and Leadership

After finishing her Ph.D., Dr. Şahin started teaching math. She worked at North Dakota State University from 1994 to 2001. Then, she moved to DePaul University. At DePaul, she became a full professor in 2010. This means she was a top teacher and researcher there. She also helped lead a special master's program. This program was designed to help teachers learn more about middle school mathematics.

In 2015, Dr. Şahin moved again to Wright State University. She became the head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Later, in June 2020, she was chosen to be the Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics. This is a very important leadership role.

Her Research and Support for Students

Besides being a dean, Dr. Şahin continues her research. She focuses on ergodic theory and symbolic dynamics. These are parts of dynamical systems. They help mathematicians understand how systems behave over a long time.

Dr. Şahin also cares a lot about helping students succeed. She works on projects that support students in STEM fields. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. She also works to make sure more people can learn math, especially groups who might not have had many chances before.

Books She Co-Authored

Dr. Şahin has helped write some important math books.

  • In 2017, she worked with Kathleen Madden and Aimee Johnson. They published a textbook called Discovering Discrete Dynamical Systems. This book was published by the Mathematical Association of America.
  • She also helped write a textbook called Calculus: Single and Multivariable. This book is used by many college students. It was published in 2016. Other famous mathematicians like Deborah Hughes Hallett and William G. McCallum also helped write this book.
