Early Life and Education
Bára Gísladóttir was born in Reykjavík, Iceland, on November 21, 1989. She started playing the violin when she was very young. As she got older, she decided to focus on the double bass.
She studied music composition at several famous schools. She earned a Bachelor's Degree at the Iceland Academy of Arts. Later, she studied at the Milan Conservatory in Italy. She completed her Masters Degree and an advanced diploma at the Royal Danish Academy of Music.
Her Music Albums
Bára has released five music albums so far. Her first album, Different Rooftops, came out in 2015. It featured music with voices, electronic sounds, saxophones, and her double bass.
In 2016, she released B R I M S L Ó Ð. This album mainly used the double bass and electronic sounds. Her 2017 album, Mass for some, included compositions for double bass, electronics, and voice.
In 2020, she released HĪBER, which also used electronics and double bass. Her latest album, SILVA, was released in 2023. She also planned a collaboration with Skúli Sverrisson called 'Caeli' for 2021.
Awards and Nominations
Bára Gísladóttir has won several important awards for her music. She received the Talent Awards from the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen Foundation. She also won the Léonie Sonning Talent Prize.
She received the "Shout Out" award at The Reykjavík Grapevine Music Awards. In 2024, she was honored with the Ernst von Siemens Composer Prize.
Bára has also been nominated for many awards. She was nominated for "piece of the year" at the Icelandic Music Awards in 2019 and 2020. In 2020, she was nominated for "Composer of the Year – Chamber Ensemble" at the Carl Prize. In 2022, she was nominated for the prestigious Nordic Council Music Prize.
