Bāṇabhaṭṭa (Sanskrit: बाणभट्ट) was a famous writer and poet from India who lived in the 600s. He wrote in Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language. Bāṇabhaṭṭa was a special poet, called an Asthana Kavi, in the court of King Harsha Vardhana. King Harsha ruled northern India from about 606 to 647 CE.

Bāṇabhaṭṭa wrote two very important books. One is the Harshacharita, which tells the story of King Harsha's life. The other is Kadambari, which is considered one of the world's first novels. Sadly, Bāṇabhaṭṭa passed away before he could finish Kadambari. His son, Bhūṣaṇabhaṭṭa, completed the story for him. People often say, "Bana has described everything in this world," showing how much they admired his writing.

Who Was Bāṇabhaṭṭa?

We know a lot about Bāṇabhaṭṭa's life and family from his own writings. He often included details about himself in the introductions to his books. For example, the first parts of Harshacharita tell us about his early years. This book is also special because it's seen as one of the first historical biographies from India. It gives us a clear picture of what life was like in the countryside back then.

Bāṇabhaṭṭa was born in a village called Pritikuta. This village was located on the banks of the Hiraṇyavāhu River. Today, this area is part of the Chhapra district in Bihar, India. His parents were Chitrabhānu and Rājadevi.

Bāṇabhaṭṭa's Journey

After his father passed away, Bāṇabhaṭṭa traveled around for some time. He explored different places and learned new things. Eventually, he decided to return to his home village.

One summer day, Bāṇabhaṭṭa received a letter from Krishna. Krishna was a cousin of King Harsha. This letter led Bāṇabhaṭṭa to meet the king. King Harsha was camping near a town called Manitara at the time. When they met, the king showed great kindness to Bāṇabhaṭṭa. This meeting was the start of Bāṇabhaṭṭa's important role in the king's court.

Bāṇabhaṭṭa's Famous Works
