As a member of an organization called DataCite, BIBSYS helps Norwegian universities and research groups use special digital codes called DOIs. These codes help identify and link to research data online. All the tools and services from BIBSYS are created by working together with the institutions they serve.
How BIBSYS Started
BIBSYS began in 1972. It was a project between two libraries in Trondheim: the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters Library and the Norwegian Institute of Technology Library. The goal was to make library tasks easier using computers.
Over the years, BIBSYS grew a lot. It started by helping just two libraries. Now, it runs a national library system for many research and special libraries in Norway. It also helps students and researchers easily find library resources.
BIBSYS is a public agency that reports to the Ministry of Education and Research. It is managed by NTNU. BIBSYS handles all the computer programs and databases from a central location. They also offer different services related to their products and other helpful services.
