About Backxwash
Early Life and Music Beginnings
Ashanti Mutinta was born and grew up in Lusaka, Zambia. She started making rap music and producing her own beats early on. She used a music software called FL Studio. When she was 17, she moved to British Columbia, Canada. There, she went to university to study computer science.
Moving to Montreal and First Releases
After finishing her degree, Backxwash moved to Montreal. She began performing her music at local jam nights. In 2018, she released her first music collection, an extended play (EP) called F.R.E.A.K.S.. Later that same year, she released another EP titled Black Sailor Moon. Around this time, she also shared that she is a transgender woman.
Award-Winning Albums
Her second full-length album, God Has Nothing to Do with This Leave Him Out of It, came out in May 2020. Backxwash's music style mixes hip hop with heavy metal and post-rock sounds. For example, she uses parts of songs by the band Black Sabbath. She also includes instrumental sections inspired by Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
Because the album used many parts of other songs without permission, it was removed from most online music stores. Now, you can only download it for free from Backxwash's Bandcamp page.
In June 2021, she released her third album, I Lie Here Buried with My Rings and My Dresses. This album received many good reviews. It was also considered for the 2022 Polaris Music Prize.
Music in TV Shows
Backxwash's songs "Don't Come to the Woods" and "Devil in a Moshpit" were featured in a TV show. They appeared in an episode of the Showtime series called Work in Progress.
