About Backxwash

Early Life and Music Beginnings

Ashanti Mutinta was born and grew up in Lusaka, Zambia. She started making rap music and producing beats using a program called FL Studio. When she was 17, she moved to British Columbia, Canada. There, she went to university to study computer science.

After finishing her degree, she moved to Montreal. She began performing her music at local jam nights. In 2018, she released her first collection of songs, called an extended play (EP), titled F.R.E.A.K.S.. Later that same year, she released another EP called Black Sailor Moon.

Musical Style and Acclaimed Albums

Backxwash's music mixes different styles. It blends hip hop with heavy metal and post-rock. For example, her songs often include sounds from the band Black Sabbath. She also uses instrumental parts that sound like the band Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Her second full-length album, God Has Nothing to Do with This Leave Him Out of It, came out in May 2020. This album was a big success and won the 2020 Polaris Music Prize. Because of some music samples used without permission, the album is no longer on most online music stores. However, you can still download it for free from Backxwash's Bandcamp page.

On June 20, 2021, she released her third album, I Lie Here Buried with My Rings and My Dresses. This album also received many good reviews. It was considered for the 2022 Polaris Music Prize.

Backxwash's songs have also been featured on TV. Her tracks "Don't Come to the Woods" and "Devil in a Moshpit" appeared in an episode of the Showtime TV series, Work in Progress.

Her fourth full-length album, Only Dust Remains, was released on March 28, 2025. This album was also longlisted for the 2025 Polaris Music Prize.
