Bacon vodka is a special kind of flavored drink base. It gets its taste from bacon flavor. People use it to add a savory, bacon-like taste to different kinds of mixed drinks. While some might try it on its own, it's mostly used as an ingredient in recipes. For example, it can be found in drinks like a Bloody Mary or a bacon martini.

The Idea of Flavored Drinks

Adding savory flavors to drinks is not a new idea. For a long time, people have enjoyed drinks with unique tastes. One famous example is the "Bull Shot." This was a favorite of writer Ernest Hemingway in the 1940s. Even as far back as the 1600s, writers like John Locke and Samuel Pepys wrote about trying savory-flavored ales.

Some places have been making bacon-flavored drinks for years. For instance, the Double Down Saloon in Las Vegas and New York made a Bacon Martini. In New York City, a drink called the Benton's Old Fashioned was created in 2008. A company called Smirnoff even made bacon-flavored shots for a short time. These were special because they were made without any animal products.

A big reason for the interest in bacon-flavored drinks is the general excitement about bacon. This trend is sometimes called "bacon mania." People really love bacon, and this interest has spread to many different foods and drinks.

Bacon-Flavored Products

In April 2009, a company from Seattle called Black Rock Spirits released a bacon-flavored product. They named it "Bakon Vodka." This product uses a simulated bacon flavor. It does not contain any actual bacon or animal products. This means it is friendly for vegetarians.

Another company, Heritage Distilling Company, also made a bacon-flavored product. Like Bakon, their product is vegetarian. It is made from grapes instead of potatoes.

Making Flavored Drinks at Home

You can make bacon-flavored bases at home. This process is called 'fat-washing'. To do this, you add liquid bacon fat to a spirit. Then, you stir it all together. After that, you freeze the mixture. The fat will become solid and float to the top. You can then remove the solid fat. This leaves behind the bacon flavor in the liquid.
