A bagel machine is a special machine that makes bagels automatically. It takes dough and rolls, presses, and shapes it into perfect circles. This machine helps make lots of bagels quickly!

The Story of the Bagel Machine

Who Invented the Bagel Machine?

In 1950, a man named Daniel Thompson started working on a machine to make bagels. He was 29 years old. Daniel's father, Mickey Thompson, had also tried to build a bagel machine for his baking business. Daniel wanted to finish what his father started.

Building the First Machine

In 1958, Daniel Thompson began building his first successful bagel machine. He worked in his garage in Cheviot Hills, Los Angeles. He named his invention "The Thompson Bagel Machine." A few years later, he got a patent for his design. This meant his invention was officially protected.

Bringing Bagels to Everyone

In 1961, Daniel and his wife started a company called "Thompson Bagel Machine Manufacturing Corporation." Five years after he began building the machine, he leased his design to Murray Lender. Murray Lender owned a family business that made bagels. This helped the machine become widely used.

Bagels Go Big!

The first automatic bagel machines were used in 1963. They appeared in cities like New Haven, Connecticut, Buffalo, New York, and St. Louis, Missouri. These early machines could make 200 to 400 bagels every hour. The biggest machines could even make up to 5,000 bagels in an hour!

Thanks to Daniel Thompson's invention, bagels became super popular very fast. You could find them in many supermarkets and restaurants. Because so many bagels could be made, their price dropped. This made bagels affordable for people all over the world.

How the Bagel Machine Changed Things

Before Daniel Thompson's machine, making bagels was a very slow process. Only a few bakers made them by hand. After the automatic bagel machine was invented, many more bagels could be produced. This made bagels much more common.

The automatic bagel machine helped make bagels famous around the world. Now, you can find them in stores and restaurants everywhere. Today, far more bagels are made than ever before, all thanks to this amazing invention!

How a Bagel Machine Works

A bagel machine makes bagels in a few simple steps. It automatically rolls the dough. Then, it shapes the dough into the classic bagel circle. Finally, it presses the dough to get the perfect bagel shape. This process happens very quickly to make many bagels at once.
