A major road, the A34 road, even runs through it from north to south. This road was moved through the wood in 1972.

A Look Back in Time: Bagley Wood's History

Bagley Wood is a very old forest. It has been around for a long, long time! For most of its history since the year 955, it has only had two owners.

Who Owned Bagley Wood?

  • From 955 to 1538, the wood belonged to Abingdon Abbey. An abbey is a type of monastery where monks or nuns live and work.
  • Then, after a few years in the 1500s, most of the wood was bought by St John's College, Oxford in 1557. This famous college in Oxford still owns it today!

How the Area Changed

Bagley Wood used to be a special area that wasn't part of any local parish. This changed over time:

  • In 1858, it became its own small civil parish. A civil parish is a local government area.
  • However, not many people lived there. In 1861, only 10 people were counted!
  • Later, in 1900, it became part of the nearby parish of Radley.
  • Finally, in 1936, it was moved to the parish of Kennington, where it is now.
