Bagrationi, wife of John IV of Trebizond facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Bagrationi was a princess from Georgia who lived a long time ago, in the 1400s. She was the first Empress of John IV of Trebizond. Her real name is not known today.

Her Family Background

Bagrationi was the daughter of King Alexander I of Georgia. Her mother was Dulandukht, who was the daughter of Beshken II Orbeliani. Dulandukht was either no longer alive or had separated from the King before the year 1415. After that, King Alexander married his second wife.

Becoming an Empress

Around the year 1426, Bagrationi married John IV of Trebizond. John was the son of Emperor Alexios IV of Trebizond and Theodora Kantakouzene.

After their marriage, John IV traveled to Caffa. He wanted to find a large ship called a galley and its crew there. By 1429, he returned to Trebizond. His father, Emperor Alexios IV, was ready to fight him. However, John IV became the new Emperor after his father's death. Bagrationi then became his Empress.

Their daughter, Theodora Komnene, was promised in marriage to Uzun Hassan of Ak Koyunlu in 1457. She married him the next year. This was a very important marriage between Trebizond and a Muslim ruler.

The marriage had special rules:

  • Theodora received land in the villages of Halanik and Sesera as a dowry.
  • Uzun Hassan promised to help protect Trebizond.
  • Theodora could continue to be a Christian.
  • She could have her own chaplain (a priest).
  • She could protect other Christians who lived under Uzun Hassan's rule.
  • Theodora also had a lot of influence in how Ak Koyunlu dealt with other countries.

Theodora's tomb was in Diyarbekir. It was shown to a visitor from Italy in 1507. Her two daughters later went to Damascus.

Her Death

Bagrationi passed away before the year 1438. After her death, John IV married another woman. She was a Turkish lady, but her name is also not known. Some historians believe she was the daughter of Dawlat Berdi. A traveler named Pero Tafur wrote in his travel notes that when he visited Trebizond in 1438, John IV had a Turkish wife.
