Bahawalpur Division facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Bahawalpur Division was an important administrative area in the Punjab Province of Pakistan. It was created in 1955 and continued to be a division until the year 2000. Before it became a division, this region was known as the Princely State of Bahawalpur.

What is a Division?

A division is like a large district or region within a country. It helps the government manage different areas more easily. Think of it as a big section of a province, made up of several smaller districts. Bahawalpur Division was one of these important sections in Pakistan's Punjab province.

History of Bahawalpur

Before 1955, Bahawalpur was a "princely state." This means it was a territory ruled by a local leader called a "Nawab" (a type of prince or ruler). These states had some independence but were often connected to larger empires, like the British Empire before Pakistan became independent. When Pakistan was formed in 1947, the Princely State of Bahawalpur decided to join Pakistan. Later, in 1955, it became a regular administrative division.

Location and Importance

Bahawalpur Division is located in the southern part of the Punjab province. It is known for its unique geography, including parts of the Cholistan Desert. The city of Bahawalpur is the main city in this division and has historical significance. The region plays a role in Pakistan's agriculture and culture.

Changes in Administration

In the year 2000, the government of Pakistan made some big changes to how it managed its regions. They decided to get rid of the division system. This meant that Bahawalpur Division, along with other divisions, stopped being an administrative unit. Instead, the districts within the divisions became the main local government units. However, the division system was later brought back in 2008.
