History of the Church
The church we know today, Baillieston St Andrew's, was formed in November 1966. This happened when two older churches, Baillieston Old Parish and Rhinsdale Churches, joined together.
Baillieston Old Parish Church: A Long Story
The story of Baillieston Old Parish Church began way back in the late 1820s. A man named George Scott gave some land to build a church and a cemetery. This new church was called the Crosshill Chapel of Ease. It was the first church in Scotland built under a special Church of Scotland plan.
The church, located on Church Street, cost £507 to build. It opened on July 7, 1833, and could seat 500 people. Before this, the only church nearby was Old Monkland Parish Church. The first minister was Rev. Andrew Gray. He also taught at the local school. The "Old Church" was used for about 140 years.
War Memorial at Baillieston Parish Church
A special memorial was set up for those who died in World War I (1914-1918). Later, names of those who died in World War II (1939-1945) were added. On April 15, 1951, a service was held to unveil and dedicate the updated memorial. William Reid (VC), a very brave soldier, unveiled it.
Rhinsdale Parish Church: A New Beginning
Rhinsdale Church, also known as the U.P. Kirk, started in March 1862. People from Baillieston met for services in a school building. They wanted their own church and began collecting money.
With their savings and help from special funds, they raised £1,200. A site was chosen, given by James Beaumont Neilson. He was famous for inventing the "hot blast," which changed how iron was made. By October 1863, the church building was almost ready. The new Rhinsdale Church opened for worship on February 17, 1864. It had a church, a Session House, and a Vestry.
Rhinsdale Church War Memorial
Many men from the Rhinsdale church served in the wars. Sixteen of them died in action. Their names were carved onto a memorial plaque on the Communion Table.
The New Baillieston St Andrew's Church
After the two churches joined in 1966, the new congregation chose its first minister, Rev. John Owen, in June 1967. For seven years, Rev. Owen and the church members worked to plan and build a brand new church. The old church needed a lot of repairs, and with more members, a bigger space was needed. The new church was officially opened in December 1974.
