History of Ball Park Franks
How Ball Park Franks Began
In 1957, a company called Hygrade Food Products got a special deal. They would be the only ones to sell hot dogs at Detroit's Tiger Stadium. This stadium was known as Briggs Stadium back then. A sausage maker named Gus Hauff worked for Hygrade. He created a new, bigger hot dog recipe. This new hot dog was very popular at the stadium.
Becoming a National Favorite
Because of their success at the stadium, the hot dogs were sold in stores in 1959. They were named "Ball Park Franks." In 1965, the company came up with a famous slogan: "They plump when you cook them." This helped the hot dogs become popular all across the country.
A Top-Ranked Hot Dog
In 1985, a teacher named Bob Wood visited every major league baseball park. He rated their hot dogs. In his 1989 book, Dodger Dogs to Fenway Franks: and All the Wieners in Between, he ranked Ball Park Franks as number one. He said they were a "dream fulfilled" for baseball fans.
Who Owns Ball Park Franks?
Over the years, the ownership of Ball Park Franks has changed. In 1989, Sara Lee bought Hygrade. Later, in 2014, Tyson Foods bought Hillshire Brands. Hillshire Brands used to be the Sara Lee Corporation. This is how Tyson Foods came to own the Ball Park Franks brand.
