Ballysallagh Forest is a lovely forest found in Northern Ireland. It is located close to the town of Bangor. Most of the trees here are coniferous, which means they have needles and cones. There is also a small part of the forest called Cairn Wood. This area has broadleaved trees, which have flat leaves that usually change color and fall off in autumn. The Forest Service Northern Ireland looks after Ballysallagh Forest.
A Challenge for the Forest
In 2014, Ballysallagh Forest faced a big problem. A tree disease called Phytophthora ramorum started to spread. This disease can harm and even kill many types of trees.
Fighting Tree Disease
To stop the disease from spreading, forest workers had to cut down many trees. In October 2014, over 20 hectares of trees were removed. This was about 7,000 trees in total.
Protecting the Forest
The area where trees were cut down included Cairn Wood. This part of the forest is very popular with people who enjoy walking. Removing the infected trees was a necessary step. It helped to protect the rest of the forest from the disease.
