The Balsera Palace, sometimes called Sendón, is a historic building in the town of Avilés, located in Asturias, Spain. This grand palace was once a private home. Today, it is a special place where young musicians learn, as it houses the Julián Orbón Municipal Conservatory of Music.

History of Balsera Palace

When Was Balsera Palace Built?

The Balsera Palace was built a long time ago, in 1909. It was designed by a talented architect named Antonio Palacios. He was from Pontevedra, another part of Spain. The palace was built for Victoriano Fernández Balsera, who was a very rich merchant from Avilés.

What Style Is the Palace?

The building shows off the Art Nouveau style. This was a popular design trend in the early 1900s. It was especially common in Catalonia, a region in Spain. Art Nouveau uses curvy lines and natural shapes, often inspired by plants and flowers.

Original Features of the Palace

Inside, one of the most interesting parts is the V-shaped staircase. It opens up grandly towards the first floor. The palace also has a flat roof and a tower balcony. From here, you can enjoy amazing views of the old city below. The palace once had huge gardens, almost as big as the famous gardens at Versailles. Sadly, only a small piece of these gardens remains today.

Palace Renovations

The city of Avilés bought the palace in 1982. After that, the inside was updated two times, in 1984 and again in 1997. These updates made sure the palace kept its original look and feel. More recently, between 2011 and 2012, the outside walls were repaired. This was done to fix damage from pollution and weather. The inside was also repainted, making it look fresh and new.
