Banke Chamar was a brave freedom fighter from India. He played an important part in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, which was a big uprising against the British East India Company. Banke Chamar led actions against the British in the Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh. He fought for India's freedom and sadly died for his actions during this rebellion.
Early Life
Banke Chamar was born in Kuarpur village, which is in the Machhali Shahar area of Jaunpur district. After the 1857 rebellion did not succeed, the British called Banke Chamar and 18 of his friends "baghis," which means rebels. He was later captured and sentenced to death.
Role in the 1857 Rebellion
Banke Chamar was a very important leader in the 1857 rebellion. He led the fight against the British from the Jaunpur region. When the rebellion ended, the British offered a huge reward of ₹50,000 for his capture. This was a massive amount of money at that time. For example, two cows were worth only about six paisa back then!
Banke Chamar and his companions had many clashes with the British forces. However, a former British soldier named Ramashankar Tiwari told the British where they were hiding. The British then sent many soldiers to capture them. There was a big fight, and Banke Chamar and his friends fought bravely, defeating many British soldiers. But in the end, the British managed to capture them. Banke Chamar and 18 of his comrades were later executed for their role in the rebellion.
