Bannatyne manuscript (Clan MacLeod) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Bannatyne manuscript is an old book that tells the history and stories of Clan MacLeod. It's made up of 142 large sheets of paper, similar to the size of old legal documents. We don't know for sure who wrote it, because the author's name isn't in the book itself. Even though the book isn't dated, a special mark in the paper, called a watermark, shows that the paper was made in 1829. The information inside the manuscript is thought to have come from the work of a man named William Macleod Bannatyne, Lord Bannatyne, who passed away in 1833.

Who Wrote the Bannatyne Manuscript?

The true author of the Bannatyne manuscript is a bit of a mystery! While the book itself doesn't name its writer, experts have two main ideas about who might have put it together.

Lord Bannatyne's Role

One strong candidate is William Macleod Bannatyne, Lord Bannatyne. He was an important person who lived a long time ago, dying in 1833.

Family Connections

Lord Bannatyne's father was Roderick Macleod, and his mother was Isabel. Isabel was the daughter of Hector Bannatyne of Kames. Because of his mother's family, William Macleod Bannatyne inherited a large estate called Kames. This is why he took on the name "Bannatyne."

Earlier Writings

We know that William Macleod Bannatyne had a strong interest in his family's history. He had already put together an earlier collection of Clan MacLeod stories in 1767. This makes him a very likely person to have created the later Bannatyne manuscript.

Another Possible Author

There's another person who might have written the Bannatyne manuscript. This person was Bannatyne William Macleod. He was a cousin of William Macleod Bannatyne, and he died in 1857. Because of these two possible authors, the manuscript seems to have been created sometime between 1829 (when the paper was made) and 1857 (when Bannatyne William Macleod passed away).
