Barbara is also a food consultant, which means she gives advice about food and cooking. These books have been translated into other languages like French and Arabic.

Early Life and Cooking Beginnings

Barbara Abdeni was born in Beirut, Lebanon. When she was young, her family moved to the United States. They settled in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. As a teenager, Barbara started learning about cooking. She helped her father, who was a photographer, in their family's Lebanese restaurant. This was her first experience working with food. In 1988, she went back to Lebanon to study at university. She earned a degree in Advertising and Marketing.

Career in Food

Barbara Massaad learned from many different chefs. She trained in Lebanese, Italian, and French restaurants. In 2006, she joined the Slow Food Movement. This is a group that works to protect local food traditions. They also help keep different kinds of plants and animals used for food safe.   • Her second book is called Mouneh: Preserving Foods for the Lebanese Pantry. This book shares recipes and stories about how people in Lebanon preserve food. This means keeping food safe to eat for a long time.
  • Her third book, Mezze: A Labor of Love, teaches readers how to make traditional Lebanese mezze. Mezze is a selection of small dishes served as appetizers.

TV Show and Helping Others

Barbara also hosted a weekly TV show called Helwi Beirut on the LBCI channel. On the show, she took viewers on food tours around Lebanon. She explored local foods, interviewed chefs, farmers, and people who make food at home.

In 2016, Barbara visited a refugee camp in Syria. After this visit, she published a special cookbook called Soup for Syria. All the money made from this book goes to help refugees. The book includes her own soup recipes and recipes donated by many famous chefs.

Barbara Massaad lives in Beirut with her husband, Serge Massaad. They have three children.
