Barbara's Early Life
Barbara was born in Beirut, Lebanon. When she was young, her family moved to the United States, settling in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Her father was a photographer, and the family owned a Lebanese restaurant. As a teenager, Barbara helped her father there, which was her first experience with cooking and food. In 1988, she returned to Lebanon to go to university. She studied Advertising and Marketing and earned her degree.
Her Amazing Career
Barbara Massaad trained with chefs in Lebanese, Italian, and French restaurants, learning many different cooking styles.
Joining the Slow Food Movement
In 2006, Barbara joined the Slow Food Movement. This group works to protect local food traditions and support small farms. She helped start Slow Food Beirut and is part of the international Terra Madre Community. In 2007, she represented Lebanon at a big Slow Food meeting in Mexico.

Barbara has written several popular cookbooks.
Man’oushé: Inside the Street Corner Lebanese Bakery
In 2012, Barbara wrote Man’oushé: Inside the Street Corner Lebanese Bakery. This book, made with Raymond Yazbeck, has about 70 recipes for Lebanese pies. These are the kinds of pies you might find in a bakery, but the book shows you how to make them at home.
Mouneh: Preserving Foods for the Lebanese Pantry
Her second book is called Mouneh: Preserving Foods for the Lebanese Pantry. It shares recipes and photos about how Lebanese families preserve food. This helps them keep food fresh for a long time.
Mezze: A Labor of Love
Barbara's third book, Mezze: A Labor of Love, teaches readers how to make traditional Lebanese mezze. Mezze is a collection of small dishes, like appetizers, that are often shared. The book has beautiful illustrations by Pascale Hares.
TV Host and Helping Others
Barbara also hosted a weekly TV show segment called "Helwi Beirut" on the LBCI channel. On the show, she took viewers on food tours around Lebanon. She cooked with local chefs, farmers, and even housewives, showing off the country's amazing food.
In 2016, after visiting a refugee camp in Syria, Barbara published another cookbook called Soup for Syria. All the money made from this book goes to help refugees. The book includes her own soup recipes and recipes donated by many famous chefs.
