Barbara Kaltenbacher studied mathematics at the Johannes Kepler University Linz. She earned her first degree in 1993. Then, she completed her doctorate degree in 1996. Her main teacher for her doctorate was Heinz Engl.
After her studies, Barbara Kaltenbacher led important research projects. From 1999 to 2001, she led a Hertha Firnberg Project. This project was supported by the Austrian Science Fund. Later, from 2003 to 2006, she led an Emmy Noether Junior Research group. This group was supported by the German Research Foundation.
She worked as a temporary professor at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg and the University of Göttingen. In 2006, she became a professor of Optimization at the University of Stuttgart. She then moved to the University of Graz in 2010. There, she was a professor of Applied Mathematics. Since 2011, she has been a professor at the University of Klagenfurt.
Barbara Kaltenbacher has also held important leadership roles. She was the president of the Austrian Mathematical Society from 2018 to 2021. She also led the scientific advisory board of the Weierstrass Institute from 2015 to 2021. In 2021, she was chosen as a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
