Barbara Kaltenbacher facts for kids
Barbara Kaltenbacher is a brilliant mathematician from Austria. She studies very special math problems, often called inverse problems. Imagine you know the result of something, but you want to figure out what caused it – that's an inverse problem! Her work helps us understand things like how sound waves behave (nonlinear acoustics) and how some materials can create electricity when squeezed (piezoelectricity).
She is a professor of Applied Analysis at the University of Klagenfurt in Austria. She has also been a leader in the European Mathematical Society and was the main editor for a big math journal called the Journal of the European Mathematical Society. Barbara Kaltenbacher has written over 130 scientific papers and helped write four math books.
Her Journey in Math
Barbara Kaltenbacher started her math journey at Johannes Kepler University Linz. She earned her first degree in 1993 and then her doctorate degree in 1996. Her special research for her doctorate was about solving tricky math problems that don't have a simple answer. Her teacher, Heinz Engl, guided her through this work.
She led important research projects, first funded by the Austrian Science Fund from 1999 to 2001, and then by the German Research Foundation from 2003 to 2006. She taught at different universities, like the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg and the University of Göttingen. In 2006, she became a professor at the University of Stuttgart. Later, she moved to the University of Graz in 2010 and then to her current position at the University of Klagenfurt in 2011.
Barbara Kaltenbacher has also held many important roles in the world of mathematics. She was the president of the Austrian Mathematical Society from 2018 to 2021. She also led the scientific advisory board for the Weierstrass Institute from 2015 to 2021. In 2021, she was chosen as a special member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, which is a great honor!
