Barbara L. Toles (born July 31, 1956) is an American community organizer and Democratic politician. She is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Toles served for eight years in the Wisconsin State Assembly. She represented Wisconsin's 17th Assembly district from 2004 to 2012.
About Barbara Toles
Barbara Toles was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in July 1956. She went to West Division High School and graduated in 1973. Later, she earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1979.
After college, Toles became a teacher in Milwaukee. She joined the American Federation of Teachers union, Local 212. While teaching, she continued her studies at Marquette University. She earned her Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in 1997.
Entering Politics
In 2003, a state representative named Spencer Coggs won a special election. He became a state senator, which meant his old seat in the Assembly was empty. This led to a new special election for the 17th Assembly district.
Barbara Toles decided to run for this open seat. She ran as a member of the Democratic Party. The special election was held in January 2004. Toles won with 79% of the votes. She was sworn into office on February 3, 2004.
Time in the State Assembly
Toles was re-elected to her Assembly seat four times. This means she served multiple terms. In April 2012, Toles announced she would not run for re-election. She decided to leave her position early. Her last day in office was July 2, 2012.
After Leaving Office
Since leaving her political role, Barbara Toles has stayed active in her community. She continues to work with the teachers' union. She has also spoken out about important local issues. Recently, she has supported efforts to make roads safer in Milwaukee. These efforts aim to reduce traffic accidents and deaths.
