Barbara of Matamba facts for kids
Barbara Mukambu Mbandi (who died in 1666) was a powerful queen who ruled the kingdoms of Ndongo and Matamba. She became queen in 1663 and ruled until 1666.
Barbara was the sister of Queen Ana I Nzinga, a famous leader who brought the kingdoms of Ndongo and Matamba together. Queen Nzinga made sure Barbara would be the next ruler. She also arranged for Barbara to marry her general, João Guterres Ngola Kanini.
Becoming Queen
Barbara faced challenges before she became queen. At one point, she was held by the Portuguese during important talks between them and her sister, Queen Nzinga. In 1656, Barbara was released. This release was part of a peace agreement that Queen Nzinga signed with the Portuguese. As part of this agreement, Queen Nzinga also returned to the Catholic faith.
After Queen Nzinga passed away, Barbara took her place on the throne. However, becoming queen was not easy. Barbara and her husband had to defend their right to rule against another leader named Njinga Mona. This struggle for the throne continued for some time. It finally ended when Barbara's son became king in 1680.
