History of Barker Ten Mile
The area around Barker Ten Mile has many important historical places. One of these is "The Meadows." This land was used by several important families for hunting and horse pastures. These families, like the Goodes and French, owned a lot of land and grew tobacco.
Margaret French McLean, who later married Angus Wilton McLean, grew up right here. Her family lands were very large. They stretched from Meadowbrook Cemetery north to Bee Gee Road. They also went across I-95 near Robeson County Community College. Margaret's father, Barry Godwin French, was called "Bee Gee." Bee Gee Road, which cut through his land, was named after him.
Barker Ten Mile is also near Ten Mile Swamp and Saddle Tree Swamp. These swamps are very important to the Lumbee people. The Lumbee are a Native American tribe in North Carolina. Families from the Lumbee tribe and the Scottish families in Barker Ten Mile often hunted together. This shows how different groups in the community got along.
