What is the Barley Sheaf Inn?
The Barley Sheaf Inn is a two-and-a-half-story building made of stone covered in plaster. It's quite large, measuring about 60 feet wide and 46 feet deep. There's also a wooden addition at the back.
What Else is on the Property?
Besides the main inn building, the property also has two other historic structures. These include an old barn and a wagon shed. These buildings are important because they show what a busy inn and farm might have looked like long ago.
A Building with Many Lives
The Barley Sheaf Inn has had many different purposes throughout its history. It was built before 1784, making it a very old landmark.
From Inn to Courthouse
From 1784 to about 1787, the Barley Sheaf Inn served a very special role. It became the first ever courthouse for Montgomery County. This means important legal decisions were made within its walls.
A Busy Inn and Tavern
After its time as a courthouse, the building went back to being an inn and tavern. It welcomed travelers and locals until 1861. Imagine people stopping there for a meal, a drink, or a place to sleep after a long journey!
Later Uses of the Inn
After 1861, the Barley Sheaf Inn changed again. It became a private home for many years. Then, in 1980, it was used for professional offices. This shows how buildings can adapt and change with the times.
Why is it a Historic Place?
The Barley Sheaf Inn is recognized as a significant historical site. On December 10, 1980, it was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history.
