Early Life and Education

Bartholomew Dodington was born in a place called Middlesex, England, around the year 1535. He went to a famous school called St John's College at the University of Cambridge. There, he studied very hard. He became very good at ancient Greek and Latin. He even gave speeches in these languages to Queen Elizabeth I when she visited Cambridge.

His Work as a Scholar

From 1562 to 1585, Dodington held a very important job. He was the Regius Professor of Greek at Cambridge. This meant he was the main teacher of Greek at the university. In 1571, he helped publish a special book. It was an edition of the ancient Greek speaker Demosthenes, prepared by another scholar named Nicholas Carr. Dodington also helped with other books about ancient writings. He was known for his deep knowledge of classical literature.

His Legacy

People thought very highly of Bartholomew Dodington. An old writing on his tomb described him as a person who was "nourished from boyhood on the finest arts." It also said he was not only an excellent scholar but also a very good and honest person. He was known for his great modesty.

Dodington passed away on August 22, 1595. He was buried at Westminster Abbey in London. This is a very famous church where many important people are laid to rest. His exact burial spot in the north transept is no longer known.
