Bartolomé de Cárdenas was born around 1575 in Portugal. When he was still young, he moved to Madrid, Spain. There, he became a student of a famous painter named Alonso Sánchez Coello. Cárdenas quickly became a respected artist himself.
He painted many important works in Madrid. One of his big projects was decorating the cloisters of the Nuestra Senora de Atocha convent. Cloisters are covered walkways, often found in monasteries or churches.
Later in his life, Cárdenas moved to Valladolid, another city in Spain. In Valladolid, he created many altar-pieces for churches. He also decorated the cloisters of the San Pablo convent. Bartolomé de Cárdenas passed away in Valladolid in 1628.
