Bartolomé de Selma y Salaverde facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Fray Bartolomé de Selma y Salaverde (born around 1595 in Cuenca – died after 1638) was a Spanish composer and a very skilled musician. He lived during the Baroque period, which was a time when music, art, and architecture had a grand and dramatic style.

Bartolomé was especially good at playing the dulcian. This instrument was an early version of what we now call the bassoon. He was also an Augustinian friar, which means he was a member of a religious order.

From 1628 to 1630, he worked at the archducal court in Innsbruck. This was like being a musician for a very important royal family. Bartolomé was related to another Bartolomé de Selma, who was a luthier (someone who makes or repairs stringed instruments) for the Spanish royal chapel. This suggests music and instrument-making ran in his family!

His most famous collection of music is called Primo libro de canzoni, fantasie & correnti, which was published in Venice in 1638. He also wrote other vocal pieces that exist as manuscripts (handwritten copies).

What Music Did He Write?

Bartolomé de Selma y Salaverde created several musical works. Here are some of his known compositions:

  • Primo libro de canzoni, fantasie & correnti (published in 1638) – This book contains various types of musical pieces.
  • Canzona a 4 sopra battaglia – A "canzona" is a type of instrumental piece, and "a 4" means it was written for four parts or instruments. "Sopra battaglia" suggests it might have a battle-like theme.
