Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Bartomeu Càrceres (also known as Bartolomé Cárceres) was a Spanish composer who lived around the year 1546. He was especially known for creating a type of music called ensaladas.

Who Was Bartomeu Càrceres?

We don't know many details about Bartomeu Càrceres's life. The only clear information we have is from a record in 1546. This record shows he received a payment of 72 ducats. A ducat was a type of gold coin used back then.

He was paid for being the "carrier of the books" for the Duke of Calabria's music group. The Duke was named Fernando de Aragón. Càrceres's pay was half of what the maestro de capilla earned. A maestro de capilla was like the main music director. The director at that time was Juan de Cepa.

Music and Collaborations

A special old music book, called Manuscript M1166-M1967, is kept at the Biblioteca de Catalunya (Library of Catalonia). This book contains music by both Càrceres and Juan de Cepa.

For example, they both worked on a song called Soleta y verge. This song was a villancico, which is a type of Spanish song. It was originally a popular song from a collection called the Cancionero de Upsala. Càrceres created a version of this song for three voices. Juan de Cepa then made his own version, building on Càrceres's work, for five voices with a repeating part called a refrain.
