Basílica del Juramento de San Rafael facts for kids
The Basílica del Juramento de San Rafael (which means Basilica of the Oath to Saint Rafael) is a special church in Córdoba, Spain. It's known as a minor basilica, which is a title given by the Pope to important churches.
This basilica stands on a very significant spot. People believe that in 1578, Archangel Raphael appeared here to a priest named Father Roeles. The Archangel promised to protect the city of Córdoba.
Building the Basilica
Money to build this church was gathered in the late 1700s. The construction of the basilica was finished in 1806. Today, it is recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural monument. This means it's a very important historical and cultural site in Spain.
What Does it Look Like Inside?
The basilica has a unique design. It combines a long main area with a round front. This style is called neoclassical, which was popular at the time it was built.
Inside, the church is divided into three long sections called naves. These sections are separated by curved arches that rest on strong, square pillars. Where the main sections of the church meet, there is a rounded ceiling that looks like a tunnel.
On the main altar, there's a special canopy called a baldachin. This canopy covers the main statue of Saint Rafael, which was made in 1735. You can also see beautiful artworks by a painter and writer from Córdoba named Antonio Cordoba Acisclus Palomino. His works date back to the 18th century.
