The Basilica of the Oath to Saint Rafael is a special church in Córdoba, Spain. It's called a minor basilica, which is a title given by the Pope to important churches. This basilica stands where people believe Archangel Raphael appeared in 1578. He is said to have promised Father Roeles that he would protect the city of Córdoba.

Money was raised to build this church in the late 1700s. Construction finished in 1806. Today, it is recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural, which means it's a very important historical and artistic monument in Spain.

What Does the Basilica Look Like?

The Basilica of the Oath to Saint Rafael has a unique design. It combines a long main hall with a round front. This style was very popular in Córdoba during the late 1700s and early 1800s.

Inside the Basilica

Inside, the church is divided into three main sections, called naves. These sections are separated by strong square pillars. Curved arches connect these pillars, creating a beautiful look.

Above the central part of the church, where the naves meet, there is a rounded ceiling. This type of ceiling is called a barrel vault.

Special Art and Features

At the main altar, you'll find a special canopy called a baldachin. Underneath it is the main statue of Saint Rafael, which was made in 1735. The church also has paintings by Antonio Cordoba Acisclus Palomino. He was a famous painter and writer from Córdoba in the 1700s. His artworks add to the beauty and history of the basilica.
