His career was mainly in the mid-1970s and early 1980s.
Playing for South Fremantle
Basil Campbell was known as a strong and active player. He joined South Fremantle in 1975. He usually played as a centre half forward. This position is often in the middle of the forward line. Basil was easy to spot on the field. He always wore a special protective helmet. He wore it because of a head injury he had early in his career.
Representing Western Australia
In 1977, Basil Campbell played for Western Australia. This was in the first ever State of Origin match. In this game, players represent the state where they first played football. Basil played on a half back flank. This is a defensive position. His team, Western Australia, won the game. They beat Victoria by a large score of 94 points.
A Football Champion
Basil Campbell was part of a winning team in 1980. He was a member of the South Fremantle team that won the 1980 WAFL Grand Final. They defeated the Swan Districts team. Basil's son, Warren, also became a football player. Warren played for St Mary's and South Fremantle. He was even in the South Fremantle team that won the 1997 WAFL Grand Final. Warren also played for the North Melbourne in the Australian Football League.
