Basil Hansen was a fantastic Australian ice hockey player. He was born on October 7, 1926, and passed away on January 2, 2015. Basil was a special member of the Australian national team. He even played for Australia in the 1960 Winter Olympics!

Playing Ice Hockey
Basil Hansen started his ice hockey journey in 1946. He joined a team called Southern Suburbs. They played their games at a place called St Moritz in St Kilda.
The next year, his team changed its name to the Monarchs. They also started playing at another rink called the Glaciarium. Basil played for the Monarchs for many years.
Winning the Goodall Cup
In 1954, Basil was chosen to play for the Victorian state team. This team competed in a big tournament called the Goodall Cup. Basil and his team played really well. They ended up winning the Goodall Cup that year!
Playing in the Olympics
The most exciting part of Basil's career was in 1960. He was picked to play for the Australian national team at the 1960 Winter Olympics. This was a huge deal! It was the only time Australia has ever sent an ice hockey team to the Olympics.
The competition was very tough. Australia played six games but didn't win any. Still, it was an amazing experience. Basil played in four of those games. He even scored one goal and had four penalty minutes during the tournament. Basil kept playing for the Monarchs until he retired in 1963.
Coaching the Team
After he stopped playing, Basil didn't leave ice hockey. He became the coach for his old team, the Monarchs! He coached them for a few years, from 1963 until 1965.
Basil's Family and Legacy
Basil Hansen was born in Melbourne, Australia. He had a son named Greg. Guess what? Greg also loved ice hockey and started playing when he was 12!
Basil and Greg even joined a team together called the Ringwood Juniors. Later, Basil coached Greg when he played for other teams like the Raiders IHC and Pirates IHC.
Even after coaching, Basil kept playing ice hockey. In 1973, he joined a team called the Night Owls. They played in a special league for older players.
Basil was a very important person in Australian ice hockey. He was given a special honor as a "life member" of the Australian Ice Hockey Federation. In 2012, he became the patron for Ice Hockey Victoria. He also won the Hudson Trophy, which is given to the IHA Sportsman of the Year. Basil passed away peacefully in 2015, leaving behind a great legacy in Australian ice hockey.
