Basil Payne (born June 23, 1923 – died January 6, 2012) was an Irish poet and a teacher. He was known for his beautiful poems and for sharing his love of literature with others.

About Basil Payne

Basil Payne went to school at Synge Street CBS and later studied at University College Dublin. In the 1960s, he gave many talks and read his poems in Dublin, including a special show at the Gate Theatre. He was very talented, and his work was recognized when he won the Guinness International poetry prize twice, in 1964 and 1966. This was a big award for poets!

From 1972 to 1978, Basil Payne taught about books and writing at different universities in the United States. He wrote three books of poetry and his poems were also included in many collections of Irish poetry. You can find his first book, Sunlight on a Square, and his last book, Dark and Light Fantastic, as digital books on Amazon Kindle. Some of his articles that appeared in the Irish Times newspaper from the 1960s to the 1980s are also available digitally.
