Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar is a very old and beautiful church located in Recoleta, Buenos Aires, a famous neighborhood in Argentina. It was finished in 1732 and is dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar, a special title for the Virgin Mary.

This basilica is super important because it's the second-oldest church in all of Buenos Aires! It started as part of a monastery for a group of monks called the Franciscans.

Building a Historic Church

The construction of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar began with an Italian architect named Andrés Blanqui. He was a Jesuit, which means he was part of a religious order. Later, another architect, Juan Bautista Prímoli, finished the work. Together, they created this amazing building that has stood for centuries.

From Monastery to Parish

For many years, the church was part of the Franciscan monastery. But in 1821, the Franciscans left. After they moved out, the Basilica became a "parish church." This means it became a local church for the people living in the area, where they could go for services and community events. It has served the community ever since, keeping its history alive.
