The Bates Building is a special old house. It is located in the Columbia-Tusculum neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio. This historic building is found in the United States. It has two stories and was built in a simple, local style. The Bates Building is one of the oldest buildings on Eastern Avenue.

Discovering the Bates Building's Design

The Bates Building was built in 1865. It is a simple house made of wood. The roof has a pointed shape, called a gable. It is covered with shingles. The front of the house is three sections wide. Each side of the house is one section wide.

Unique Features of the House

Even though the house is simple, it has a fancy front porch. This porch was likely added after the house was built. The porch pillars have detailed, angled wood designs.

The eastern side of the house is also very interesting. It has a part that sticks out, making the house not perfectly rectangular. This part includes a small, oval window. It is the only window in the house that is not rectangular.

Why the Bates Building is Historic

In 1979, the Bates Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important places in the United States. It was recognized for its special architecture.

Protecting Historic Places

The Bates Building was one of seventeen properties in Columbia-Tusculum added to the list. These properties were part of a larger study. This study looked for important historic buildings and places. The goal was to help protect them for the future. Most of the properties were buildings. But two cemeteries, Columbia Baptist and Fulton-Presbyterian, were also included.
