The Battle of Arroyo Grande was an important fight that happened on October 28, 1818. It took place near a place called Arroyo Grande in what is now Uruguay. This battle was part of a bigger conflict known as the Portuguese conquest of the Banda Oriental.
The battle was fought between two main groups. One side was the Luso-Brazilian forces, led by Bento Manuel Ribeiro. These were soldiers from Portugal and Brazil, which were united at that time. The other side was the Artiguist forces, led by Fructuoso Rivera. These soldiers supported José Artigas, a leader who fought for independence in the region. The Luso-Brazilian forces won the battle.
What Happened After the Battle?
After the Luso-Brazilian forces won at Arroyo Grande, many Artiguist soldiers and officers changed sides. They joined the Luso-Brazilian army. This happened because they were promised that they would not be punished.
This battle, along with the soldiers changing sides, was a big problem for Artigas. It made it much harder for him to continue his fight for independence.
