The Battle of Bairén was an important fight in 1097. It happened during the Reconquista, a long period when Christian kingdoms in Spain tried to take back land from Muslim rulers. In this battle, the famous Spanish warrior Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, also known as "El Cid", teamed up with Peter I of Aragon, the King of Aragon. They fought against the Almoravid dynasty, a powerful Muslim group from North Africa, led by Muhammad ibn Tasufin. The battle took place near Gandia, in what is now Spain. It ended with a big win for the Christian forces from the Kingdom of Aragon and the Kingdom of Valencia.

Why the Battle Happened
El Cid's Control of Valencia
El Cid had already taken control of the city of Valencia on June 17, 1094. This was a huge victory for him. After this, he wanted to make sure he could keep Valencia safe.
Forming an Alliance
To protect his new territory, El Cid decided to make an alliance. He joined forces with Peter I of Aragon, the King of Aragon. They met in a place called Burriana later in 1094. Their main goal was to fight against the Almoravids, who were a big threat.
Supplying a Key Castle
As part of their plan, El Cid left in December 1096. He had help from Aragonese soldiers. Their mission was to bring weapons, ammunition, and other supplies to the castle of Sierra de Benicadell. This castle was very important. El Cid had captured it back in October 1091. It helped control the main route into Valencia from the south. This action was part of El Cid's efforts to reclaim land in the eastern part of Spain before the Almoravids arrived from North Africa.
The Battle of Bairén
Almoravid Interception
Muhammad ibn Tasufin, the leader of the Muslim forces, decided to stop the Christian army. He marched his troops to Xàtiva. From there, throughout January 1097, he tried to bother and threaten El Cid and King Peter's forces. Despite these challenges, the Christian army managed to reach the castle at Sierra de Benicadell and deliver the supplies.
Trapped at Bairén
While El Cid and King Peter were marching north, they set up camp at Bairén. This spot was just a few kilometers north of Gandía. The Almoravids were smart. They managed to take control of the high ground nearby, a mountain called Mondúver. From this high position, they could easily attack the Christian camp.
To make things even worse, General Muhammad also brought a fleet of ships. These ships, from both Almoravid and Andalusian areas, sailed close to the shore. Archers and crossbowmen on the ships could shoot at the Christian forces. This meant the Christian army was caught in a dangerous crossfire from both the mountain and the sea.
El Cid's Bold Charge
The situation looked very bad for the Christian army. But one morning, El Cid gave a powerful speech to his soldiers. He ordered them to make a direct, strong attack on the Almoravid forces. His plan was to break through the middle of their army.
By the middle of the day, the attack was in full swing. The Almoravids were completely surprised by how brave and desperate this charge was. They couldn't hold their ground and quickly broke apart. They fled the battlefield in a confused mess. Many Almoravid soldiers drowned in the river as they tried to escape. Others drowned in the sea while trying to reach the safety of their ships.
After the Battle
Christian Victory Spoils
After their big win, the Christian army was able to take many valuable things. They looted the Almoravid camp, gathering a lot of victory spoils.
Safe Passage to Valencia
With the Almoravid threat defeated, the Christian army could continue their journey safely. They marched on to the city of Valencia. This battle helped secure El Cid's control over Valencia for a while longer.
