The Battle of Kwatarkwashi was a very important fight in 1903. It happened between the British, who were taking control of parts of Nigeria, and the powerful Kano Emirate. Why the Battle Happened
British Expansion in Nigeria
In 1899, a British leader named Lord Lugard announced that a large area of Northern Nigeria was now under British control. This area included the powerful Sokoto Caliphate. The British tried to make deals with the Caliph, who was the ruler of the Sokoto Caliphate. However, these talks did not work out.
So, in 1900, the British started a military campaign. Their goal was to bring the entire Caliphate under their rule.
Kano's Fight for Freedom
In February 1903, news reached Sokoto that the British had won the Battle of Kano. They had also captured the city's fort. The Kano cavalry, who were skilled horse soldiers, decided they had to act. They began a march to try and take their city back from the British.

The Ambush
The Kano cavalry had already won three smaller fights against British forces. But this time, things were different. A large British force from Kano set up an ambush. They waited for the Kano cavalry near the big rocks of Kwatarkwashi.
The Fight and Retreat
The battle lasted for six hours. It was a fierce fight. During the battle, the Vizier of Kano was killed. The Vizier was a very important official, like a chief minister. After his death, the remaining Kano cavalry had to retreat. They headed back towards Sokoto.
However, a large part of the Kano force did not retreat. Instead, they surrendered to the British. This group was led by Muhammad Abbas. They then went back to Kano with the British.
Aftermath of the Battle
Once in Kano, Muhammad Abbas was declared the new Emir of Kano. An Emir is a ruler, similar to a king. The remaining Kano cavalry soldiers who had retreated were later joined with the main army of the Sokoto Caliphate. The Battle of Kwatarkwashi was a major victory for the British. It greatly weakened the Kano Emirate's ability to resist British rule.
