The Battle of Llandeilo Fawr was an important fight that happened on June 17, 1282. It took place near Llandeilo in Wales. This battle was part of a bigger conflict when Edward I, the King of England, was trying to take control of Wales. In this battle, an English army led by Gilbert de Clare, 6th Earl of Hertford, fought against a Welsh army from the southern part of Wales. The Welsh won this battle.

Why Did the Battle of Llandeilo Fawr Happen?

In 1282, King Edward I of England wanted to conquer Wales. He had a big plan to attack Wales from three different directions. His goal was to surround and defeat the armies of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, who was a powerful Welsh leader.

King Edward sent one of his commanders, Gilbert de Clare, to the southern parts of Wales. Clare's job was to take control of these areas. This would help the English armies surround the Welsh forces.

What Happened During the Battle?

Gilbert de Clare led an army of about 1,600 foot soldiers and 100 horsemen. His army had successfully captured Carreg Cennen Castle from the Welsh. After their victory, the English soldiers took valuable items from the castle.

On June 17, they were heading back to a nearby English base, Dinefwr Castle. They planned to store the items they had taken there. However, on their way, the Welsh troops surprised Clare and his men. The Welsh attacked them suddenly. A large part of the English army was destroyed in this ambush.

What Was the Result of the Battle?

The Battle of Llandeilo Fawr was a big win for the Welsh. This victory stopped the English from moving further into south Wales for several weeks. It also messed up King Edward's plan to attack Wales from many sides at once.

Sadly, among the English soldiers who died was the son of William de Valence, 1st Earl of Pembroke. After this defeat, King Edward removed Gilbert de Clare from his command. He replaced him with William de Valence. Valence was very determined to fight the Welsh after his son's death.
