What Was the Battle of Mechain?
The Battle of Mechain was a conflict that took place in 1070. It was a fight for control over two important Welsh kingdoms. These kingdoms were Gwynedd and Powys. The battle helped decide who would be the ruler of these lands.
Why Did the Battle Happen?
Before this battle, a powerful Welsh ruler named Gruffydd ap Llywelyn had died. After his death, Harold Godwinson (who later became King of England) divided Gruffydd's lands. He gave the rule of Gwynedd and Powys to two brothers, Bleddyn ap Cynfyn and Rhiwallon ap Cynfyn.
However, Gruffydd ap Llywelyn had two sons, Maredudd and Idwal. In 1070, they wanted to get back parts of their father's kingdom. So, they challenged Bleddyn and Rhiwallon to a battle at Mechain.
Who Fought in the Battle?
On one side were the brothers Bleddyn ap Cynfyn and Rhiwallon ap Cynfyn. They had been given control of the kingdoms. On the other side were Maredudd ap Gruffydd and Idwal ap Gruffydd. They were the sons of the previous ruler, Gruffydd ap Llywelyn.
What Was the Outcome?
The battle was a victory for Bleddyn ap Cynfyn. Both of Gruffydd's sons were defeated. Idwal (sometimes called Ithel) was killed during the fighting. Maredudd died after the battle.
Sadly, Rhiwallon ap Cynfyn, Bleddyn's brother, was also killed in this battle. This meant that Bleddyn ap Cynfyn was left to rule both Gwynedd and Powys by himself.
