The Beard Cabin is a very old and special house in Shawnee, Oklahoma. It was built way back in 1892. People believe it was the very first home ever built in Shawnee! This cabin is so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's officially recognized as a historic site in the United States.
Who Built This Special Cabin?
A young woman named Etta Ray and her father, P.H. Ray, built the cabin. They had help from John Beard and his sister, Lola Beard. John Beard later became Etta's brother-in-law. Etta then married John's brother, Henry Beard. Etta and Henry were the first people to live in the cabin.
What Was the Cabin Like?
The cabin was a simple home. The sleeping areas were on the top floor. Today, the cabin still has furniture inside. You can even visit it! If you want to see inside, you can make arrangements at the Santa Fe Depot Museum.
Moving the Cabin to a New Spot
In 1999, the Beard Cabin needed some help. It was damaged during a big windstorm. The cabin was then carefully fixed up and moved. Its new home is near the Santa Fe Depot on Main Street. A group called the Cleo Craig Foundation gave money to help move the cabin.
