Who Was Beatrice Heron-Maxwell?
Beatrice Maude Emelia Eastwick was born in London on 15 July 1859. Her father was Edward Eastwick, who was a scholar of Eastern cultures, a diplomat, and a member of the British Parliament. Her mother was Rosina Jane Hunter. Beatrice also had a sister, Florence Eastwick, who became a novelist too.
Early Life and Family
Beatrice first married F. Lane Huddart, and they had two daughters together. After Mr. Huddart passed away, Beatrice started her career as a writer.
In 1891, she married again. Her second husband was Spencer Horatio Walpole Heron Heron-Maxwell. He was the son of a well-known family, the Heron-Maxwell Baronets of Springkell.
Her Amazing Writing Career
Beatrice Heron-Maxwell was a very busy writer. She published her stories in many popular magazines of her time. Some of these included The Bystander, The Harmsworth Monthly Pictorial Magazine, Pall Mall, The Strand, and Tit-Bits.
Famous Stories and Characters
One of her interesting series of stories was called The Adventures of a Lady Pearl Broker. These stories featured an early female detective named Mollie Delamere. This was quite unusual for the time!
She also wrote a novel called The Queen Regent. This book was a type of story known as a Ruritanian romance. This means it was an adventure story set in a fictional, often royal, European country. Her novel was about a young widow who becomes the ruler of an island nation.
Later Life
Beatrice Heron-Maxwell sadly passed away on 7 March 1927. She was in Westbourne Grove, London, when she was hit by a car. She died at the hospital two days later, at the age of 67.
