Izeta Selimović (born March 27, 1936 – died March 10, 2020), known as Beba Selimović, was a very popular singer from Bosnia and Herzegovina. She was famous for singing sevdalinka and traditional folk music. Beba was one of the top female singers in Yugoslavia during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. She sang alongside other great artists like Zehra Deović and Nada Mamula.

Early Life

Beba Selimović was born on March 27, 1936, in Trebinje, which is now in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Her family originally came from a place called Bileća. She was the youngest of five children in her family. Because she was the youngest, her older brothers and sisters called her beba, which means baby. Later, she used this nickname as her stage name when she became a professional singer.

When Beba was seven years old, in 1943, her family moved to Sarajevo. This was during World War II. She finished her schooling in Sarajevo.

Music Career

Beba Selimović started her amazing music career when she was 17. She was one of only six people chosen to sing for Radio Sarajevo out of 300 hopefuls. This happened in 1954, and she became a solo singer for the radio station.

Her very first song, called "Po mojoj bašti zumbuli cvjetaju" (which means "In My Garden Hyacinths Bloom"), was released in 1958. Beba Selimović stopped performing and recording new music in 1988. Her last studio album was released that year. Even though she retired, her older songs have appeared on many collection albums since then.

During her long career, Beba sang only two types of music: Bosnian folk songs and sevdalinka. Sevdalinka is a traditional type of folk music from Bosnia and Herzegovina. She recorded songs with many other famous sevdalinka singers. Some of these included Zaim Imamović, Zehra Deović, Nada Mamula, Safet Isović, and Meho Puzić. She was very good friends with Safet Isović and Meho Puzić until they passed away in 2007.

Personal Life

Beba Selimović got married when she was young. She became a mother at the age of 20. Sadly, her first husband passed away in 1971. They had two sons together, named Samir and Senad.

Later, she married a violinist named Dževad Šabanagić. They lived in Sarajevo and experienced a difficult time during the Bosnian War. Beba Selimović mostly stayed out of the public eye after she retired. She rarely gave interviews. However, she did agree to an interview in November 2014 for a newspaper called Dnevni avaz. She explained that she had retired years ago and wanted younger singers to have a chance to perform.

Beba Selimović passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 10, 2020. This was just 17 days before her 84th birthday. She was buried in a Muslim ceremony at Sarajevo's Bare Cemetery on March 12, 2020.
