Mr. Terupt's Influence
Over time, all the students begin to like Mr. Terupt. He has a special way of making everyone feel involved. He inspires them to try harder and do their best. He even sets goals for the class. If they reach these goals, they get a special party day. Mr. Terupt even convinces the principal, Mrs. Williams, to let the class play outside in the snow on their reward day.
An Unexpected Accident
During the snow day, the students are playing roughly. An icy snowball accidentally hits Mr. Terupt. He falls into a coma. This happens because he had many concussions when he was a wrestler in high school and college.
Changes in the Students
The accident deeply affects all the students. They worry about what happened and their part in it. But even while Mr. Terupt is in the hospital, his lessons continue to guide them.
- Jeffrey had been feeling guilty for a long time. He felt responsible because his donations could not save his brother's life. After the accident, he finally talks to his sad parents. He tries to help his family heal.
- Alexia learns to be a true friend. She understands why she used to lie and try to control others. She decides to change her ways.
- Peter learns an important lesson. He realizes that students with learning challenges can sometimes be very wise.
A Happy Ending
As the school year ends, the students think about how much Mr. Terupt helped them grow. They are very excited when he returns to school on the last day. The principal then announces that Mr. Terupt will be their teacher again for sixth grade!
