About Becky Han's Music Journey
Becky Han grew up in Arctic Bay, a community in Nunavut, Canada. When she moved from Nunavut to Brandon, Manitoba, she started posting videos of her music online. This was a way to keep sharing her songs with her parents. Soon, many people online started following her music!
Becky writes and shares her songs in Inuktitut for two main reasons. First, she wants to help keep the Inuktitut language strong and alive. Second, it helps her feel close to the community where she grew up. Becky has built her music career while also being a stay-at-home mom.
Winning Songwriting Contests
Becky Han has won several awards for her amazing songs. In 2016, she won both first and second place in the Nunavut Department of Culture and Heritage's Qilaut Inuktut children's songwriting contest. Becky and Tracy May also won second place in the 2019 Qilaut contest with their song "6-muaqpat." Another one of their songs, "Piqannarijaq," came in fifth place that same year. Becky had also placed eighth in the 2015 contest with a song she wrote with Melissa Reid.
In 2018, Becky won first place in another contest held by the Qikiqtani Inuit Association. This contest was for the best original song or poem in Inuktitut. Her winning song was called "Nagligigakkit," which means "because I love you." She also placed third in this contest in 2019.
