Beeveria is a special group of mosses that only grow in New Zealand. It belongs to the Daltoniaceae family. This group is monotypic, which means it only has one known species: Beeveria distichophylloides. The name Beeveria was chosen to honor Jessica Eleanor Beever, a famous New Zealand expert on mosses.

Where Beeveria Lives (Habitat)

Beeveria distichophylloides is a type of moss that loves to grow on rocks. You can find it in many different places, from lower areas (lowland forests) to higher, cooler mountain forests (montane forests).

This moss especially likes rocks that contain calcium carbonate, like limestone. It often grows near the entrances of caves, along the edges of shady streams, and inside deep, narrow valleys called ravines and gorges. Sometimes, you might even spot it growing on old logs or at the bottom of trees.

Beeveria distichophylloides also prefers areas that get a lot of rain. It really enjoys growing on surfaces that are always damp and moist.

Where Beeveria is Found (Distribution)

This unique moss is found only in New Zealand. It grows on the North Island, the South Island, and even on the Chatham Islands.
