Belfast, Missouri facts for kids
Belfast is a small, unincorporated community located in Newton County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. An unincorporated community means it's not an official city or town with its own local government. You can find Belfast in the southwestern part of Missouri, situated on the south bank of Lost Creek. It's about four miles west of the larger town of Neosho. A railway line, the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway, passes right through the community, following the Lost Creek valley.

A Look Back: Belfast's History
Belfast was founded around the year 1880. It was named after the city of Belfast in Ireland. Many of the first people who settled here had come from Ireland, and they wanted to honor their ancestral home.
What Was Belfast Called Before?
Before it was known as Belfast, the community had a different name. Until 1887, it was called "Iron Switch." We don't know exactly why it was called Iron Switch, but it might have been related to the railway or local industries at the time.
The Post Office in Belfast
A post office was opened in Belfast in 1889. This was an important service for the people living there, allowing them to send and receive mail. However, the post office didn't stay open for very long. It closed its doors in 1901.
Belfast's Population
In 1925, a record shows that Belfast had about 25 people living there. This tells us it has always been a very small community.
